BARZAN, Kurdistan Region — Older people in Erbil's Barzan area are teaching younger generations the skill of grafting - joining plants to grow them together.
The Zbara voluntary organization, which works to protect the environment, started a campaign to teach grafting to youth.
20 young people took part.
"It’s fully organic and we don’t use any chemicals," said grafter Shahab Selki, who has been cultivating pear trees for six years.
"They can last forever, if there are no strong winds or wildfires. My son and grandson will also benefit from them,"
"We have two main goals in doing this activity. First, we want to revive the culture of grafting from our forefathers so it can be done in other areas of the Kurdistan Region in order to turn the wild trees into fruit-bearing ones. The second goal is for young people to learn this technique," said Zbara head Shahrivan Selki.
